Treatment of Dry Macular Degeneration PhotoBioModulation
Since it was discovered in 1903 by Dr Linnsen who found that treating Acne Vulgaris with UV light was beneficial
the study of using long wave lengths of light to modulate cells and in particular initiate repair mechanisms has evolved.
It has taken a leap forward in the past 10 years with the invention of LED lights that can generate various long wavelength of lights.
Phase 1,2 and 3 randomised trials have all proven successful in benefit those with moderate drusen in dry macular degeneration and with not centre involving geographic atrophy.
The treatment is undertaken with a German made light Machine called Velada. There are 22 centres in the UK set up undertaking this treatment.
It has proven very safe and clinical trials have proven its eeffectiveness. It is early days introducing it into clinical practice but this is the first
step for a treatment for dry macular degeneration.
We are starting treatments in our clinic in August time and with the Retinal pigment epithelial advanced analysis of K9 Zeiss Cirrus OCT
we will be able to tell what difference it has made. This software analyses the images and calculates the area, volume of drusen and area of geographic atrophy. It can compare it with previous readings to see what has changed. Sadly until now the changes I have observed have all been with the lesions growing very significantly with in a year. I am looking forward to the first results in our practice.
It would appear in the trials to be very safe with no adverse events recorded.
