AREDS II

AREDS II study did not show Omega 3 Beneficial

This long awaited second study into the benefit of Vitamins in Macular degeneration was designed to answer the question whether Lutein or Omega 3

would provide additional benefit over the Standard AREDS I vitamins eg. PreserVision Original.

The study showed NO  benefit. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists has issued a press release on the subject available from

http://www.rcophth.ac.uk/news.asp?itemid=1369&itemTitle=Diet+study+clarifies+optimal+nutrient+formula+for+protecting+against+AMD&section=24&sectionTitle=News

Thus my recommendations to my patients in line with College press release is to use PreserVision Lutein but not to take additional Omega 3.
