Long-term use of aspirin and age-related macular degeneration.
The Telegraph article in January 2013 highlights 3 different studies that have all reported an association of aspirin and the more advanced stages of Age related macular degeneration particularly wet Age related macular degeneration.
The BeaverDam study, The European and Australian studies all found an association of increasing risk of Age related macular degeneration with those taking aspirin. It appears the risk is in those who already have Age related macular degeneration and it increase the risk of progression of the Age related macular degeneration. The risk is around 2 to 3 times of progression occurring compared to those not taking aspirin.
Thus for those with Age related macular degeneration it may be wise to discuss with your doctor whether it is safe to stop aspirin or change to an alternative such as Clopidogrel or warfarin.
